Finding a Qualified Therapist

How to Choose a Therapist

Asking the following questions will help you understand what a particular massage therapist has to offer and whether he or she is right for you.

  • Are you licensed by the state of Ohio?
  • What school did you attend?
  • How long was your training?
  • How long have you been practicing?
  • How much continuing education do you acquire each year?
  • When did you last participate in a continuing education class?
  • Do you take a medical history before the massage?
  • What should I wear for the session?
  • Are your clients draped while receiving therapy?
  • In what time increments do you schedule?

Who can perform massage therapy?

A Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT) is the only professional who may perform medical and therapeutic massage services. In Ohio, one must complete and pass a minimum of 600 hours of traditional massage curriculum at a state-licensed training facility. The intensive training to become a license massage therapist includes supervision and guidance in the areas of anatomy and physiology, orthopedic evaluation and proper documentation procedures. Finally, a state licensure test must be passed before a limited medical license to practice massage is issued.
