Making the Most of Your Therapy

Here are a few suggestions to help you make the most effective use of your therapy sessions.

Arrive Early

Coming to your therapy session early will help ease any anxiety you may have and give you some time to slow down and collect your thoughts. Consider bringing a small spiral bound notebook to write an agenda, record your thoughts or feelings, write down some questions, list some things that happened during the week and record suggestions made during your session. While you wait, consider the following questions: What do I want to happen as a result of therapy? How might my life be different after therapy?

Ask Questions

Bring up specific issues or thoughts to your therapist during your session. This will give you clarity on ideas or questions from previous sessions and help connect all the aspects of your experience.

Apply & Review

Between sessions, review what was discussed and recommended. Try some of the ideas and advice and record the results so that you can talk about them in your next session and keep your therapist informed.
